Clerk of the Municipal Court
270 Grant Avenue
Palo Alto, California

Dear Sir:

\J
I just received another Jury Summons and am again asking to be excused.
On March 5, 1975 I was called for Jury duty. I had explained in a letter
that I would like a postponment of my service. Since circumstances
have not changed here is part of that letter:

"I hereby wish to ask for a postponment of my jury duty. Besides my
regular employment here at Stanford, I have been hired as a temporary
assistant professor at San Jose State University. I was hired to
develop and teach a new graduate course in their mathematics
department. I am currently teaching this course and will be doing so
until the middle of June.

I was hired because the
faculty believed that there was no one presently in their department
who was qualified.
Thus there would be significant hardship placed on
the students of the class -- approximately forty, some of whom need
the material to receive their Master's degree; and the faculty members
who are attending my course to develop their proficiency would be
seriously set back. Since there is no one who could substitute for me,
their Master's program would suffer. "

My request was turned down. I appeared and was rejected as a juror.
What was more disturbing was that I had to postpone a take-home examination
for a week because I had no way of knowing whether I would be available to
my students.

I am thus again asking to be excused from jury duty. My situation has not changed;
it is only later in the semester and more hectic and hurried.
